FAQ and Questions to ask when considering a volunteer program

Six Questions to ask yourself when considering long term volunteer service.

  1. Why do I want to volunteer? Can you think of three reasons?
  2. What impact will volunteering have on my relationships? With family? Friends?
  3. Am I looking for a faith-based program? If so, to what level of participation do I want to be engaged? Do I want spirituality to be part of this experience?
  4. Is there a particular geographic area where I'd like to volunteer or am I open to a new experience?
  5. Do I want to live in a community? If so what type, with religious sisters, brothers, or priests? With other volunteers?
  6. What type of service work do I want to do? What skills do I have? What do I want to gain?

Claretian Volunteer Program FAQ

How many volunteers do you have in your program?
On average we place 8 to 10 volunteers a year, with the potential of placing up to 15.

Is there an age limit?
Our program is focused on volunteers between the ages of 21 and 29.

Do you have to be Catholic / Christian to participate in the Claretian program?
Our program is open to individuals of other faith traditions. Our expressing of faith is in the Catholic traditions and we invite and expect that all of our volunteers participate in the local faith community. On average about 20% of our volunteers come from other faith traditions.

Where do volunteers serve?
We place volunteers in Chicago, Illinois; Stone Mountain, Georgia; and Springfield, Missouri.

What type of work do Claretian Volunteers do?
Our volunteers work in a variety of positions. Because of our small size we match your skills to the needs of the local community.

How long is the commitment?
Our volunteers make a one year commitment.

Is there a cost to participating in the program?
Because of the generous support of the Claretians, there is minimal cost to the volunteer other than personal travel and expenses.

Do I get compensated for my service?
Each volunteer is provided simple accommodations in a community, room and board, basic health insurance, transportation, and a monthly and an adjustment stipend at the end of your successful term.
