Ministries Claretian Volunteers work in a wide variety of ministries, including:
Ministry Locations The Claretian Volunteers currently offer placements in Chicago, Illinois; Stone Mountain, Georgia; and Springfield, Missouri. Placements in Juarez, Mexico and other international sites are available on a case-by-case basis and usually after a term of domestic service. Volunteer Opportunities The first is Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish on the far South Side of Chicago. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the oldest of the Claretian missions in Chicago. It was established in the 1920’s and was one of the first parishes in Chicago to serve the Mexican community. The parish has a large elementary school, an active worshiping community, religious education, and youth programs, as well as Villa Guadalupe and Claretian Associates. Villa Guadalupe Senior Services is a 53-unit residential apartment facility for older persons, which provides secure housing that encourages autonomy and allows its residents the ability to stay in their community. Claretian Associates is a community development organization that provides affordable housing and related human services to low- and moderate-income persons, serves as a catalyst for residents and institutions in developing innovative solutions to community problems, and builds community-based leadership. The second parish is Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, located in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. The Claretians have been serving at this dynamic parish since the 1940’s. The Back of the Yards is described by residents as a “neighborhood where people care and like to help each other” despite high levels of poverty, poor access to education, and gang violence. As an immigrant community, the people of Holy Cross/IHM work hard and support the many programs the parish offers. Holy Cross/IHM supports two alternative schools, a food pantry, and a mentoring program. In addition, the parish is famous for its marimba and dance troupes. St. Paul Parish in the Pilsen/Little Village area of Chicago is the third Claretian parish in Chicago. The Claretians began their ministry to the people of St. Paul’s in the late 1980’s. St. Paul’s is an active parish with a growing grade school and young adult program. In addition to the parish activities the Claretians sponsor Casa Claret, a supportive community living experience for Latino men pursuing college educations. The Pilsen/Little Village area has a good mix of Anglo and Mexican cultures in a growing neighborhood. In addition to placing volunteers at Claretian parishes, Claretian Volunteers in Chicago serve in agencies and organizations such as the 8th Day Center for Justice, the Chicago Legal Clinic, and organizations that are associated with or share in the vision or goals of the Claretians. Possible placements are also available at Claretian Publications and the St. Jude League. In many cases positions can be arranged to match the skills and interests of a volunteer with the needs of more than one agency or with organizations in Chicago that are looking for volunteers.
